Frequently asked questions
Does my visa type change the smog check rules?
No. California smog rules depend on the vehicle and the event (renewal, sale, first registration), not on whether you hold an H-1B, F-1, L-1, green card or citizenship.
Can I get my car serviced without a US credit history?
Yes. Repair shops, tire shops and smog stations take cash, debit or credit cards; no credit check is needed for normal service.
Are prices negotiable at US auto shops?
Prices are set by each shop, so they vary. Call two or three shops, ask for the total including fees and tax, and ask for a written estimate before work starts.
