Driver questions, answered
Short answers to the questions drivers ask most about smog checks, tires, finding an honest shop and car care. Each answer links to official sources and to the shops near you in the AppointAuto directory of auto service businesses in all 50 states.
Finding a shop
- What is the best way to find an auto shop near me? — Use a directory that lists every shop in your city with phone, website and directions, check the state license, then call two or three shops for a quote.
- How do I find an honest, trustworthy mechanic? — Check the state registration, ask for a written estimate, look for ASE-certified technicians and read reviews. Your rights under California law.
Smog check
- Where can I get a smog check near me? — Any BAR-licensed smog check station can test your car, unless your DMV notice says STAR. How to find one in your city, what it costs and what to bring.
- How long does a smog check take? — About 20 to 30 minutes for cars from 2000 and newer, longer for older cars that get a tailpipe test. How to avoid waiting.
- Do I need an appointment for a smog check, and are stations open on weekends? — Many smog stations take walk-ins and many open on Saturday; some open Sunday. Call ahead to confirm hours, wait time and the total price.
- How long is a California smog certificate valid? — A passing smog certificate is valid for 90 days, for registration renewal and for selling the car. When to time the test.
- Can I get a smog check if my registration is expired? — Yes. A station can test a car with expired registration. Pay the DMV fees on time to limit late penalties, and ask the DMV about a temporary operating permit.
- What does a smog check test, and why do cars fail? — A visual and functional inspection plus an OBD scan (2000 and newer) or a tailpipe test (older cars). The most common reasons cars fail.
Tires
- Can I drive with a nail in my tire? — Only a short, slow drive to a tire shop, and only if the tire is holding air. Leave the nail in. When the tire can be repaired and what it costs.
- How much does it cost to fix a flat tire or patch a nail hole? — A proper plug-and-patch repair is listed at $29.99 on AppointAuto; shops set their own price. What is included and when the tire must be replaced instead.
- How long do tires last? — Tread usually lasts several years of normal driving; age matters too. When to replace by tread depth and by age, and how to read the DOT date code.
- Are used tires safe to buy? — They can be, if you check the age, tread, repairs and damage first. A short checklist before you pay for a used tire.
Car care
- What is the difference between a car wash and auto detailing? — A car wash cleans the outside quickly; detailing deep-cleans and protects the inside and outside by hand. Which one you need and how to find both.
- My car broke down. What should I do? — Get safe first, then call for roadside help or a tow, and choose where the car goes before the tow truck arrives.
- How dark can window tint be in California? — Front side windows must let in at least 70% of light; the windshield may only be tinted at the top. Rear windows can be darker with dual side mirrors.
- Can a windshield chip be repaired, or do I need a new windshield? — Small chips and short cracks outside the driver's line of sight can usually be repaired; long cracks or damage in front of the driver mean replacement.
