Where can I get a smog check near me?

In California, any smog check station licensed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair can test your car, unless your DMV renewal notice says "Smog Certification Required at STAR Station". AppointAuto lists every licensed station by city, with phone numbers and directions, licensed stations first. Expect to pay the station's test price plus the $8.25 state certificate fee when the car passes.

Key facts

• California smog check stations are licensed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR).
• Only cars whose DMV notice says STAR must go to a STAR station; STAR stations can also test every other car.
• The state certificate fee is $8.25 per passing vehicle; stations set their own test price.
• Results go to the DMV electronically; you do not carry paperwork to the DMV.

• Every California city
• Outside California: emissions and inspection stations by state

Before you pick a station

• Read your DMV renewal notice: does it say STAR? (STAR vs regular)
• Make sure the check engine light is off; a lit light is an automatic fail (pre-test checklist).
• Ask whether the price includes the $8.25 certificate and whether a retest is free.
