# Your Auto Repair Rights in California: Estimates, Invoices and Old Parts

In California, every auto repair shop must be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Before work starts, the shop must give you a written estimate, and it cannot charge more than the estimate without your approval. When the work is done, you are entitled to an itemized invoice listing parts and labor, and you can ask for your replaced parts back if you request them when you authorize the repair. If a shop does not follow these rules, you can file a complaint with BAR.

## Your rights at a glance

| Stage | Your right |
| --- | --- |
| Choosing a shop | The shop must be registered with BAR and display its sign and registration number |
| Before work | A written estimate for parts and labor, signed by you |
| During work | No work beyond the estimate without your approval |
| After work | An itemized invoice showing parts (new, used or rebuilt) and labor |
| Replaced parts | Returned to you if you ask when you authorize the work (except warranty or core-exchange parts) |

## Tips to avoid surprises

- Book a specific service and ask the price when you book. On AppointAuto, listed prices are shown before you request a time.
- Ask the shop to call you before doing anything not on the estimate.
- Ask to see the worn part or a photo when a repair is recommended.
- For smog repairs, check whether you qualify for [CAP assistance](https://appointauto.com/guides/california-cap-smog-repair-assistance/) before approving work.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I check if a shop is licensed in California?

Use the license search on bar.ca.gov. Enter the shop name or registration number to see its status and any disciplinary actions. Smog stations have their own license type on the same site.

### Can a shop charge me for a diagnosis?

Yes, if it tells you first and you agree. Diagnosis or teardown charges should be on the written estimate.

### What if the final bill is higher than the estimate?

The shop must get your consent before doing work that goes over the estimate, and it must record that consent. You do not have to pay for unauthorized extra work.

### How do I file a complaint against a repair shop?

File online at bar.ca.gov. Keep your estimate, invoice, photos and any messages. BAR mediates many disputes and can take action against shops that break the law.
