# My car broke down. What should I do?

First get safe: pull as far off the road as you can, turn on the hazard lights and, on a highway, stay buckled in or stand well away from traffic. Then call your roadside assistance (often included with insurance, a credit card or the car warranty) or a local towing service. Before the truck arrives, decide where the car should go: a repair shop that can take it, not just the nearest lot, so you are not towed twice.

## Key facts

- Hazard lights and staying away from traffic lanes are the first priority.
- Many insurance policies, auto clubs and new-car warranties include roadside assistance; check before paying for a tow.
- AppointAuto lists towing services and repair shops by city, with phone numbers.

## Questions to ask the towing company

- What is the hook-up fee and the price per mile?
- How long until you arrive?
- Can you take the car to the shop I choose?
- Do you accept my roadside assistance or insurance?
