# About AppointAuto

AppointAuto is a free directory of auto service shops in the United States: smog check stations, tire shops, repair and body shops, car washes, detailing and more. It helps drivers find a nearby shop, compare it with others around it, and call or get directions. Using it needs no account, and shops cannot pay for a better position.

## Where the listings come from

- Business names, addresses, phone numbers and websites come from the openly licensed [Overture Maps](https://overturemaps.org) Places data.
- In California, New York and Pennsylvania, listings are matched to state license records (the [Bureau of Automotive Repair](https://www.bar.ca.gov), the New York DMV and PennDOT), so you can see whether a shop holds an active license and since when.
- For many shops, opening hours, prices and services are read from the shop's own website, and each one links to the page it came from.
- Shop websites are checked automatically, and a website that no longer works is removed from the listing.

The full list of sources and licenses is on the [data sources](https://appointauto.com/data-sources/) page.

## How shops are ordered

Shops are ordered only by things anyone can check: an active state license, a listed phone number, a working website, and how many independent sources agree on the listing. No shop is marked down, and no shop can pay to move up.

## What we never do

- We do not invent ratings, reviews or prices. Reviews stay on Google and Yelp, and we link to them.
- We do not guess opening hours or prices: they appear only when the shop's own website lists them. Call before you go.
- We do not sell your personal information. See the [privacy policy](https://appointauto.com/privacy/).

## Driver guides

The [guides](https://appointauto.com/guides/) and [answers](https://appointauto.com/answers/) explain smog checks, tires and repairs in plain language, with links to the official sources they are based on (California BAR, DMV, CARB, NHTSA and others).

## For shop owners

Every listing page has a free "Claim this listing" link to keep the phone number, website and services right. Wrong details or want a listing removed? Use the [removal and correction](https://appointauto.com/listing-removal/) page; we answer within 5 business days.
